The Pettus Lady Eagles took on two foes this week and captured two wins, exacting some revenge on the Victoria Cobras and also dealing the Austwell-Tivoli Redfish a loss.

“I am very proud of my girls’ work ethic and determination. We were behind in both games and did a great job of rallying back to win,” said head coach Darcy Siddon.

“We are getting better and better with each game and working more and more as one team unit.”

In the rematch with the Victoria Home-Schooled Cobras on Monday, the Lady Eagles got off to a slow start. The Cobras held a 12-6 advantage after one period but they had not seen the best of the Pettus defense.

The Lady Eagles allowed the Cobras just 10 more points, not in the second quarter but for the entire rest of the game to cage the Cobras, 37-22.

The Eagles took a 16-14 lead into the half and then pushed that to 30-20 after three quarters. The Cobras succumbed to the Lady Eagles’ defense and could not spark a rally.

Mari Carrizales led the Pettus scoring with 10 points. Hailee Schauer followed with eight while Chloe Garza hit for seven. Ryan Grayson added six points and had a big night on the boards with 14 rebounds. Ashley Duran contributed four tallies and helped the Lady Eagles dominate with 13 caroms. Savannah Del Bosque completed the scoring with two points.

On Tuesday night, the Lady Eagles traveled to Austwell to tangle with the Lady Redfish.

The Lady Eagles had their offense in high gear right from the opening tip, taking a 13-8 lead at the end of one. The fighting Lady Redfish rallied in the second period with some good shooting and tough defense to gain a 20-19 advantage by halftime.

The second half was all Lady Eagles. The Pettus girls poured in 14 points in each of the third and fourth quarters while limiting the Redfish to 16 total points. The final was a 47-36 victory.

Carrizales again led the Pettus scoring with 10 points. Schauer had eight and Garza followed with seven. Grayson sank six points and contributed 14 rebounds. Duran recorded four points and helped out on the boards with another big night rebounding with 13. Del Bosque added two points.

The Lady Eagles begin district play on Jan. 14 with a home contest against Kenedy.
