But Madison Shaw, daughter of Kyle and Barbara Shaw of Karnes City, happened to be in the right place at the right time.
The six-year-old was waiting with her dad at an airport – Love Field in Dallas – when she caught the eye of a gentleman who turned out to be the president of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
Madison was decked out in burnt orange attire that showed she was a UT Longhorn fan and Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey handed Madison a card and asked her and her dad to stop by for a tour of the Texas Tech campus while she was in Lubbock.
In a gesture of “good will” Madison traded her UT headband for Bailey’s Texas Tech lapel pin.
“I’m going to take this headband to the president of the University of Texas tomorrow,” Bailey told Madison and her dad, adding that he would also let him know that he “got one of his” – young!
Madison and her dad went to the administration building and as soon as they arrived they were welcomed with a backpack full of “Texas Tech” goodies. There were even “black and red” only M&Ms.
The president’s staff treated Madison and her dad to a full tour of the campus riding in the president’s golf cart.
They stopped at the football field and toured the facility. They then went to the basketball arena for a full tour of that facility. They visited the president’s suite while the Lady Longhorns were warming up on the court for a game against the Lady Raiders later that night.
In the training room, Madison got to meet two of the Lady Raiders basketball players.
“Are you coming to the game tonight?” the players asked Madison.
“Dad, can we go to the game tonight?” Madison asked her dad.
Madison and her dad had plans to meet Madison’s mom for a special dinner in Lubbock that night, but Madison decided she would rather watch the basketball game, instead.
