Vera Mae Johnson Collins was born on December 12, 1919, to the late James Alexander (Zack) Johnson and Bessie Cade Johnson, on the old Johnson Ranch in Bee Cave, Texas. She entered eternal rest on January 28, 2010 at the age of 90. Vera married Harry H. Collins on June 20, 1942. Harry entered the Army during World War II and Vera traveled alongside him to each station. After the war, Harry returned and he and Vera made their home in San Antonio. Here they raised two children, Carolyn and Harry James. Vera returned to her nursing career and worked for three doctors prior to beginning her 42 years with Dr. O. A. Rinn, who became her faithful, loving friend and companion for over 50 years. Vera’s love for adventure led her to obtain her pilot’s license in 1967, at the age of 46. She then joined the Civil Air Patrol and earned the rank of Lieutenant, serving 31 years. In 1974, Vera received top honors when she was awarded the Principia Chapter American Business Women of the Year Award. Vera retired at the age of 79, and moved to Kenedy in 1998, where she joined her daughter and family. Although she suffered a stroke shortly after moving to Kenedy, she still enjoyed her family. She joined the First United Methodist Church of Kenedy, where she made many friends. During her illness, Vera was blessed with a faithful caregiver, Janet Garza, for over 6 years. Her family is most grateful for her loving care. She was also blessed to have part time caregivers Martha Roberts, RoseAnn Garza, Mary Gonzales, Irma Guzman, Tina Rosales, and the wonderful care of Linda Prebble and David Franke. Also to Alice Rossett for keeping Vera beautiful all these years, as her appearance was of the most importance. Vera’s final years were filled with love and many happy moments with her family and friends ever at her side Vera is survived by her daughter Carolyn (Linley) McDonald of Kenedy, TX, her son Harry James (Barbara) Collins of Port Aransas, TX, grandchildren Brett McDonald, Harry James Collins, Jr., Angela Collins and Michelle McDonald, step-grandchildren Raymond Boullt, Linley McDonald, Jr. and Kathy Hale, great-grandchildren Caitlin McDonald, Tyler McDonald, Jacey McDonald, Harry James Collins III and Hanna Jo Collins, and step-great-grandchildren Courtney Robertson, Casey Boullt, Liam McDonald, Connor McDonald, Corey Hale, Kristyn Hale, Kortlynn Lovings and Camryn Lovings. She is also survived by her faithful friend and companion for over 50 years Dr. O.A. Rinn, brother-in-law Tom Collins, sister-in-law Joanne Collins and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Vera is preceded in death by her parents, sister Jeanelle Clark, sister Willie Herwig, former husband Harry H. Collins and grandson Barett McDonald. A Family Visitation was held Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Eckols Funeral Home from 1PM to 2PM with Funeral Services following at 2PM at the Eckols Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Houston and Rev. Trey Hill officiating. The family requests that memorials be made to either the American Heart Association or American Breast Cancer Foundation. Eckols Funeral Home, Inc. 420 W.
