The Beeville girls got right down to business and routed the visitors, 5-0.
Forward Victoria Elizalde scored three first half goals to set the tone. Within the first 10 minutes of the contest, Elizalde scored on two headers to give the Lady Trojans a quick 2-0 lead.
Natalie Elder got the assist on the first goal and Heather McKinney put across a corner kick right where Elizalde could get to it for an assist on the second goal.
The two teams were scoreless through the rest of the first half, except for the final nine seconds. The Lady Trojans seemed to be in control and putting pressure on the Southside defense over the last several minutes of the first half. The Lady Cardinals were called for a penalty inside the box and the Beeville girls were awarded a penalty kick with just nine seconds left in the first half.
Elizalde calmly made the kick into the far right corner, away from the Southside keeper for a 3-0 Beeville lead.
The Lady Trojans picked up two more goals in the second half. Alisa Patterson knocked the ball to the back of the net and Heather McKinney got the assist with another good cross to the front of the goal.
The final Beeville score came on an Elder short breakaway. She got in front of a couple of Cardinal defenders and controlled the ball to get a good angle. The ball zipped past the keeper and into the net for the final goal that made the score 5-0.
The Beeville defense was again superb, according to head coach Amber Orchard.
“The girls really played up for this game. There is a lot of talent on this club,” Orchard said.
Defensively, Taylor Lawson, Claire McKinney, Morgan McKinney, Kaitlynn Willeford, Daisy Fish, Sydney Wesson and keeper Randi Maupin kept the Cardinals at bay and limited their shots-on-goal to just a few.
Heather McKinney spearheaded the offense with her deft passing and ball control. Elizalde, Patterson, Elder and Helen Sierra manned the offensive push for the Lady Trojans. Midfielders Tori Munoz, Celeste Contreras and Erika Martin added strong defense and offense throughout the contest.
The Lady Trojans played last night (Friday) in San Antonio to wrap up their regular season against Harlandale.
The Beeville girls will get a first-round bye in the postseason and will play an area round game on either March 28 or 29. The Lady Trojans will play the bi-district winner of the match between the runner-up of District 60 and third place team in District 59.
“Now the hard stuff begins, getting ready for the playoffs,” their coach said.
