Gilberto “Gilo” Suniga, 97, of George West, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011.

Mr. Suniga was born April 28, 1914, in Bee County to Juliana (Davila) and Bencelias Suniga. He married Martha Rodriguez on May 17, 1937, and was a farmer, rancher and member of St. George Catholic Church. He was retired from Katzfey Brothers Electric Mill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bencelias and Juliana Suniga; his wife, Martha R. Suniga; three sons, Juan R. Suniga, Benito R. Suniga and Luciano R. Suniga; two brothers, Vencelao Davila Suniga and Agustin Davila Suniga; and six sisters, Ofelia Lopez Suniga, Elvira Morin Suniga, Agrora Cuevas Suniga, Agustina Cuevas Suniga, Francisca Suniga and Juanita Barrera Suniga.

Survivors include three sons, Martin R. Suniga of Comanche, Jose R. Suniga of Beeville and Gilberto R. Suniga Jr. of Houston; two daughters, Juanita R. Velasquez of George West and Francisca R. Stevenson of Houston; 26 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Eugenio Davila Suniga of George West.

Visitation was held Friday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Galloway & Sons chapel in George West. A rosary was recited there that evening at 7 o’clock.

The funeral Mass was celebrated at St. George Catholic Church Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with Father George Johnson officiating. Burial followed at George West Cemetery.
