The community is invited to a Fourth of July organ concert of patriotic music performed by John L. Blackburn on Sunday, July 3, at 3:30 p.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 311 E. Corpus Christi St.

He will play the Barnhart Memorial Organ, which has recently been enhanced with additional pipes, installed with funding from the Cathryn Berninger music endowment fund for St. Philip’s.

Everyone is also invited to a reception after the concert in Chambliss-Braly Hall, at which a freewill offering will be taken for the projects of the Women of the Church.

The program includes “America, the Beautiful,” John Philips Sousa’s “The Liberty Bell,” three shape-note hymn-tunes and selections by American composers.

Blackburn is organist and choirmaster at St. Philip’s and adjunct professor of music at Coastal Bend College. He is a graduate of Baylor University, with a bachelor’s degree in church music with organ emphasis and a master of music degree in church music.

He is a member of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society, Pi Kappa Lamba, the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada, and the Royal School of Church Musicians.
