RUNGE – In District 16-A Division II, the chase for the postseason kicked off on Friday night. For the Runge Yellow Jackets, their first test was the Agua Dulce Longhorns. Like Runge, Agua Dulce’s team is young and looking to make a name for themselves. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, the Longhorns took the first step towards the playoffs as they came out of Runge to hand the Yellow Jackets a crushing 43-34 defeat. Runge head coach Ken Wallace was unavailable for comment as of press time.

The first half saw the Longhorns and Yellow Jackets go back and forth. The 1st quarter ended with the score at 7 to 6 in favor of Agua Dulce. In the 2nd quarter, the Yellow Jackets came alive as junior running back Dylan Torres scored with 8:47 to go. The following two-point conversion was good, giving Runge a 14-7 edge. The Longhorns countered just 20 seconds later with a running touchdown of their own to cut the lead to 14-13 after the conversion failed. With 6:16 left, the Yellow Jackets continued to pound it out as Torres punched it in once more from near the goal line with the extra point putting the lead at 21-13. The Yellow Jackets’ last score of the half came with precisely three minutes left as senior running back A.J. Mejia broke through the Longhorns’ defense for the touchdown. Following the PAT, the lead was extended to 28-13 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. Just as time expired, the Longhorns countered with a touchdown and a two-point conversion of their own to cut the lead to 28-21 as both teams headed for the locker rooms for halftime.

In the second half, the Longhorns took control. All scoring in the second half took place in the 4th quarter, with the Longhorns outscoring the Yellow Jackets 22 to 6 during that period. Three consecutive rushing touchdowns from the Longhorns during the 4th quarter occurred before the Yellow Jackets tacked on the last touchdown of the game. Those six points came with 1:30 to go as junior running back Eric Gutierrez scored on the ground to cut the Longhorns’ lead down to 43-34, but the Longhorns ran out what little time remained to finish the game. Statistics for the game were unavailable at press time.

This week the Yellow Jackets will travel to Bruni to take on the Badgers. Kickoff in Bruni is set for Friday, September 30 at 7:30 PM.
