Nominations for the 2011-2012 Gifted and Talented program are being accepted at Pettus Elementary for kindergarten. Students must be nominated and tested prior to joining the G/T program. Nominations are due no later than Friday, Oct. 28. Letters, informing parents/guardians of nomination procedures, were sent home with students who are currently in kindergarten.

Typical characteristics of a Gifted and Talented student include expression through oral means as well as written means, curiosity about how things work and are made, creativity in more than one area, questioning of reasons, leadership abilities, good character, sense of humor, persistence until job is accomplished, an adventurous spirit, ability to see things and ideas in new and different ways, enjoyment of being mentally challenged, the ability to be a quick thinker, ability to organize and a consistent high level performance in school. Students nominated should demonstrate a majority of these characteristics.

Nominations may be made by a parent, teacher or anyone with knowledge of the nominee’s abilities. Testing of those nominated for the Gifted and Talented program will begin after Nov. 7.
