BEEVILLE – The Alice Coyotes were in town on Thursday night to meet the Moreno Middle School Trojans on the basketball court.

The Beeville boys captured three wins over the visitors in impressive style.

The seventh-grade boys chased the young Coyotes out of the gym. The A team led 26-2 at the half and went on to dominate the visitors, 40-8.

Leading the way for the Trojans were the Cantu twins, Justin (15 points) and Jordan (six points) who made their presence felt down low in the blocks. Augie Canas finished with eight points and Adolf Garcia chipped in seven tallies. Steve Barrera and Michael Virata contributed with two points apiece.

The 7B team was looking to finish the sweep, but had a little more trouble fending off the ‘Yotes as the score at the end of first quarter of action was just 4-3. Things looked a lot better for the Trojans in the second quarter as the Beeville boys outscored Alice 10-0 to take a 14-3 lead into the half. The Trojans were strong on defense and limited the Coyotes in shot attempts to very few in the quarter.

Jonathon Carrillo, A.J. Gomez and R.J. Gonzales all had eight points to lead the charge for the Trojans as they were able to finish off Alice, 28-9. Kolton Wright knocked in the other four points for the MMS Trojans.

The 8A team continues play this weekend at a tournament in Victoria and all teams travel to Calallen next Thursday night for games against the Wildcats.

The 8A team did its part to help sweep the Alice Coyotes with a 33-19 win over the visitors.

“The Trojans played great man defense all night, shutting down the Alice scoring attack, while also pulling down boards and chasing after any and all loose balls,” said coach Bryan Grams.

Leading all scorers with 11 points was point guard Dylan Castillo. Adrian Acevedo finished with eight points and Tommy Dominguez tossed in four. Josh Perez added three points. David Gomez, Chris Salazar and Josh Huser hit for two each for the Trojans. Gabriel Cardenas closed out the MMS scoring with one points.

The win was helped by the hustle on defense by Chon Hernandez, who came up with one steal and three rebounds. J.D. Cuevas also contributed a steal to go along with four big offensive rebounds.

No report has been received on the 8B team game vs. the Coyotes.
