Truman Flournoy Gill, 87, of Tuleta, died on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009.
He was born in Beeville on Feb. 17, 1921, to Martha Smith and Truman Milam Gill. He married Claudia Poff in Tuleta in 1945. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, as a “sea-going” Marine aboard the USS Mississippi for half of his enlistment. He was recently honored to unveil a plaque dedicated to the “sea-going” Marines during a special ceremony at the Museum of the Pacific War, formerly known as the Nimitz Museum, in Fredericksburg.
Upon his return from the service he began working in the family business, the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. He also owned and was a principal of Gulf Coast Securities in Victoria.
He was a rancher and a member of the American Brahma Breeders Association and Nimitz Memorial Museum board of directors. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Beeville.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia Gill of Tuleta; and one sister, Martha Iris Goodman, and husband Jimmy of Beeville.
Visitation was to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home chapel in Beeville. Funeral services will be held there at 2:30 p.m. today (Saturday). Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Museum of the Pacific War.
