He graduated from Sour Lake High School in 1938, attended and graduated from Texas A&M University, Class of 1943, old Army, Corps of Cadets. He was a school teacher in Harlington Texas, worked in the Beaumont Shipyard during the war, and finished his career in the oil and gas industry retiring from Amoco Production Company.
Mr. Grohn belonged to the Masonic Lodge for 60 years, served as Worshipful Master of the Beeville Lodge #261, served as District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 38, awarded a Lifetime Class A Esoteric Certificate. In the York Rite Chapter and Council, he has served as the Most Excellent High Priest, Thrice Illustrious Master, District Deputy Grand High Priest, and District Deputy Grand Master in the Blue Lodge and York Rite Esoteric work.
Mr. Grohn lived in Fredericksburg for the past 11 years.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Grohn; daughters, Johna Clark, and her husband, Randy, of Fredericksburg, and Carole Barr and her husband, Al, of Spring, TX; grandchildren, Jessica Smith, Joel Smith, Shellie Perez and her husband, J.R., Justin Barr and wife Lauren; and great-grandson, Grant Perez.
Funeral service for John Henry Grohn took place on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 10 a.m in the First Baptist Church of Fredericksburg with Dr. Don Higginbotham officiating. A graveside service took place on Friday, February 17, 2012, Rosedale Cemetery in Sour Lake, TX, at 11 a.m.
