Racing back into town again, the Texas Mile arrives for its spring land speed event, to be conducted Friday through Sunday at Chase Field.

We wish to join local merchants, officials and auto/motorcycle racing enthusiasts in welcoming event founders Shannon and Jay Matus, the racers and crews back to Beeville – just in time for some glorious spring weather and a nice display of wildflowers.

As Michelle Wright, Beeville Main Street manager, pointed out, “This weekend, Beeville will be filled with tourists from all over Texas and from around the world, spectators and racing enthusiasts will be filling our restaurants, frequenting our stores and spending their money in our fair city. Currently, there are approximately 3,000 event-goers who come to Beeville and Chase to watch 250 racers seek to set the new land speed record.”

Please see our special section in today’s edition, with many stories, photos and advertised specials. Also, there is a listing of sponsors of the “Around the Town on Saturday Night” event featuring restaurants, entertainment houses and even some retail establishments, including boutiques, antiques and jewelry.

On Sunday, the Christian Motorcyclists Association is scheduled to lead a spiritual worship service.

Even if one is not an avid racing fan, it is genuinely hoped that everyone here will provide words of welcome and best wishes to our twice-a-year visitors, many of whom travel great distances for “three days, one mile, no speed limit.”

In honor of St. Patrick, the timing should be apropos for this Irish blessing: May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back.
