Elmer Leland "Dude" DuBose, 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 8 years, Earlan Commander DuBose; son, Leland Wayne (Loree) DuBose and daughters, Karen DuBose and Elaine (Rob) DuBose Carter; grandchildren, Boone, Candice & Lacee DuBose and Jade and Jamie Rutledge; two step daughters, Gloria (Edgar) Covey and Carol (Wes) Higgins; grandchildren, Kim, Jamie, Courtney, Jonathon Covey and Chance Fenner. He is survived by his brother Wayne (Mavournee) DuBose, Billy Ray (Diane) Forehand and numerous nieces and nephews. Leland was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Jessie Mae DuBose in 1991.

Leland was born November 16th, 1922 in Pawnee, Texas to Cleo & Lillie DuBose. He was president of his Senior Class and Best All Around Boy as he graduated in 1940 from Pawnee High School. Leland played every sport at Pawnee but was captain of the basketball team. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was sent to the South Pacific to prepare areas for troops to be stationed. He was honorably discharged April 8, 1946.

Leland had a long career as a home builder in Corpus Christi and with the help of his good friend, Jule Pels, helped start Pels & DuBose Builders. Leland was active in the Home Builder's Association and other civic organizations in Corpus. He retired in 1987 to hunt and fish with his good friends Gus and Sparky, and spend time at the family farm with his sister, Snooks.

Leland raised his children in Portland, Texas. When his kids were young, he was active in Little League and as they grew up, he was an avid fan and constant fixture at G-P basketball, baseball, and football games. He was a long standing member of St. Christopher's By the Sea Episcopal Church where he lovingly watched over the maintenance of the church building and grounds and helped welcome many a new minister to their church home.

Leland valued family, friendship, and hard work, passing this on to his children and grandchildren. People always said, "he would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it." We will never forget his great sense of humor and the sparkle in his eye.

Many people contributed to Leland's care, watched over him and brightened his days including Mary Frances Commander and Lauren, Melodie, Gage & Jordan and Corvette.
