Kenedy Lions tear apart Eagles

KENEDY – The host Lions roared out to a 6-0 lead after just one inning and then cruised in for a 13-3 five-inning win over the Pettus Eagles varsity baseball club on Saturday.

The Eagles scored one run in the top of the second as Clay Brown earned a one-out walk. Zack Gonzales reached on an error to move Brown into scoring position. Matt Gonzales rapped a double to plate Brown to make it a 6-1 contest.

The Lions added three more runs in their half of the second to increase their lead to 9-1.

The Eagles tacked on one more run in the third as Beck reached on a Kenedy error. Brown drew a two-out free pass to advance Beck to second base. Zack Gonzales came through with an RBI single to plate Beck.

The visitors made it a 9-3 game in the fourth with another single run. Anthony Mendoza doubled with one out and was moved to third on a Taylor Yeoman single. Beck brought Mendoza in on a sacrifice fly to right.

The Lions answered with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and then closed it out with a single run in the home half of the fifth, ending the contest.

Mendoza had two hits in three trips to the plate for the Eagles with a double and one run scored. Yeoman was 1-3. Beck scored one run and had one of the Pettus RBI’s. Brown walked twice with one run scored. Zack Gonzales was 1-2 with one walk and one RBI. Matt Gonzales was 1-3 with a double and RBI.

The Eagles traveled to Port Aransas on Tuesday night to play the Marlins and will be back at home on Friday to face the Woodsboro Eagles.

The loss drops the Pettus boys’ district record to 2-5, while their overall mark falls to 6-10.
