GEORGE WEST – When Hector Cortez ran into his living room shouting, “Get out! Smoke!” his wife, JoEnna, grabbed up their 6-year-old and 9-month-old daughters, and two pet dogs and exited their home.

Cortez and his dad had been in the back yard Thursday when they noticed smoke coming from the roof, said JoEnna Cortez.

A fire had erupted in the attic or had started on the roof about 6:20 p.m., JoEnna said.

The house in the 1400 block of Chelsea Drive was destroyed by the fire.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The George West Volunteer Fire Department and the Three Rivers Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the fire.
