Goliad sets Cinco de Mayo Internacional 2012

GOLIAD – Cinco de Mayo Internacional 2012 is set at the Goliad County Fair Grounds on Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5.

Featured live entertainment includes conjunto music, Mariachi performance, ballet folklorico dancers, Tejano and country music, BBQ cook off, kiddie rides, and much more.

Friday evening, a performance is expected from Hidalgo ballet folklorico dancers at 7 p.m., with live music to begin at 8 p.m. featuring David Valadez y La Guerra Musical.

At 10 a.m on Saturday, an official ceremony will be at the site of the Zaragoza Statue. Former Goliad Mayor Hernan Jaso is master of ceremonies and Mayor Eliud Alberto Lozano Cisneros of Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, sister city of Goliad, will also be featured, along with Mayor Jay Harvey of Goliad and Goliad County Judge David Bowman.

Food vendors, cold drinks and an array of arts and crafts booths will be on hand. No fee will be charged to enter the Fiesta grounds or for all the musical entertainment.

The Zaragoza Society will celebrate its 68th anniversary along with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla (May 5, 1862) and the 50th anniversary of the Churubusco Club runners of soil from Goliad, Texas to Puebla, Mexico.

In 1962, young runners brought soil and an eternal flame from La Bahia to Puebla, Mexico. Some of the original dignitaries and runners will be on hand for this year’s Fiesta.

Goliad’s Sister City, Hidalgo, and its delegation will arrive on Friday afternoon and will be welcomed by a Goliad delegation of city and county officials, along with officers of the General Zaragoza Society.

Guests and participants will join the Fiesta at the Goliad County Fairgrounds for continued entertainment until midnight.
