The Bee County Sesquicentennial Celebration Center Advisory Board is sponsoring a belated 150th Bee County birthday celebration Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is located at 201 N. St. Mary’s St. in Beeville near the post office.
Beginning at 11:30 a.m., there will be a salute to veterans and U.S. military personnel around the world in the Veterans Hall of Fame, section 2D in the building. Pictures of military personnel and veterans from Bee County are on display. (If any present or former Bee County resident would like to furnish a copy of his or her own military picture or one of a relative or friend from Bee County, call 358-2233 or 358-8868, or mail the picture and information to R.L. (Bob) Horn, P.O. Box 15, Normanna, Texas 78142. Pictures will be placed on display at special events.)
Gospel Crossroads Band will provide music throughout the celebration. Events and contests include an art contest for children and adults, a musical talent contest, a steer roping contest, a bean bag throw, an egg-in-a-spoon race, a dress-like-the-old-timers contest, a Bee County history hunt, a “What is it?” contest, and a youth parade around the block (weather permitting).
There will be a collection area for aluminum can recycling. Jet team members are collecting cans to raise funds for painting the jet plane at the Bee County Courthouse. There will also be a glass collection location for unwanted clear glass for the Coastal Bend College Art Department’s blown glass courses.
