“Where were you at the barbecue?” we have been asked more than once this week.

Apparently a nice-sized crowd, along with 31 cooking teams, attended the first Bee Cookin BBQ Cook-off at the Charco Ranch of Dan and Brenda Hughes last Saturday.

In addition to the cook-off, those attending enjoyed live bands, food booths and a live auction. The entire event helped raise needed funds to benefit the Beeville Volunteer Fire Department.

We have heard unofficially that as much as $100,000 was collected that night for the BVFD. That’s phenomenal.

As Donnie Morris, longtime fire chief, and other BVFD members have noted, that’s much more than has been generated in the past from chicken barbecues at the fire station or the annual Fill the Boot campaign.

Area residents would be hard-pressed to name a more deserving group. Our fire department has always been there for its citizens, as well as those living in nearby counties – being called out at all hours, extinguishing house, business and brush fires, and saving the lives of people and pets.

For more than 100 years, the BVFD has been an award-winning outfit, from finishing first in pumper races to hosting fire training schools attended by most firemen in the surrounding counties.

Now, with their state-of-the-art equipment, including a ladder truck which extends 100 feet into the air to help control tall structure blazes, the department needs funds to operate.

We genuinely admire Fire Chief Morris, Assistant Chiefs Lanny Holland and Bill Burris and the almost 50 volunteers who charge into harm’s way to protect us and our homes.

We also thank Brenda and Dan Hughes for their generosity, opening their ranch to the public and hosting this highly successful first-time event.

Organizers and those involved in any capacity should be commended, especially when one considers the dry vegetation in the countryside and years of drought we have endured.

God bless our courageous firefighters.
