AUSTIN – Three Pettus athletes worked their way to the state track and field meet last weekend and represented the Eagles quite well.

Casey Jones, a junior, competed in the 400-meter dash and turned in his best time of the year with a clocking of 49.94. That was good for ninth overall in the state in a race that was won by Damian Vidales of Seagraves in 47.68.

“Having an athlete qualify for state is a huge accomplishment and it is an honor just to compete in Austin. Casey and I were proud to get there and happy for the experience,” said Eagle track coach Darcy Siddon.

“We know he will get there again next year and he’ll be striving for a medal. I am proud of his finish and turning in his fastest time ever and getting a 49 was our main goal all year.”

Lady Eagle Chloe Garza competed in the 300-meter hurdles at state. Garza finished just outside of medal consideration with a fourth place timed in 45.78. Teammate Savannah Delbosque competed in the 1,600-meter run and placed ninth in state with a time of 5:50.36.

“What a great year. I am extremely proud of all our athletes’ accomplishments. They set goals and reached them,” said Lady Eagle track coach Erica Garza.

“Chloe’s fourth place finish with a time of 45.7 was quite a finish. As she put it, it was bittersweet, being that close to a medal. However, she was very satisfied with her performance. Savannah competed well. She has highlighted her year with two trips to a state meet in one year. Without a doubt, these two young ladies will be missed. We wish them the very best.”

Both Savannah and Chloe are seniors and ended their high school track careers at the final meet of the year at state.
