AG’s Fugitive Unit arrests Beeville parole violator in Victoria

A 44-year-old man wanted on a parole violation after being convicted of indecency with a child in Beeville a dozen years ago is back in custody.

Attorney General Greg Abbott reported this week that his Fugitive Unit arrested John Michael

Campos at his residence in Victoria on a warrant issued by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Parole board on May 15, 2008.

Campos had been sentenced to 12 years in prison in Bee County after being convicted of sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl. He was arrested on Jan. 27.

The fugitive was one of five taken into custody by the Abbott’s Fugitive Unit’s Coastal Bend operation. Three of those arrested were charged with failing to maintain sex offender registration requirements. The other two, including Campos, were convicted child sex offenders who had violated their parole.

Others nabbed by the Fugitive Unit included:

•Rodolfo Castillo, 52, who had been convicted in of aggravated sexual assault of a child in Nueces County in 1988 and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

The AG’s office said the victim in that case had been a 6-year-old family member.

A parole violation warrant was issued after Castillo allegedly assaulted his current girlfriend.

State officers made the arrest on Jan. 27.

•Charles Edward Mitchell, 59, who was convicted in 1999 on a charge of indecency with a child by sexual contact and sentenced to six years in prison.

The victim in that case was a 6-year-old Jackson County girl.

State officers caught up with Mitchell on Jan. 26 in Corpus Christi. He was wanted for failing to register as a sex offender.

•Daniel Escobar Gonzales, 40, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison after being convicted of aggravated sexual assault in 1991.

His victim was a 21-year-old female stranger. He was taken into custody on Jan. 27 in Falfurrias for failing to resister as a sex offender.

•Paul Burton Jones, 57, who was discovered to be in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service in Houston.

He had been sentenced to 80 months in prison and three years parole after being convicted of two counts of trafficking in child pornography in Oklahoma County, Okla.

The Corpus Christi Police Department issued a warrant for Jones’ arrest on July 17, 2008.
