Wyatt Blackwell, son of Will and Monica Blackwell and student at Moreno Middle School, was selected to travel to the Austin/San Antonio area as a participant in Education in Action’s Lone Star Leadership Academy, June 3-8.

Wyatt’s selection for the Academy was based on her outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, a nomination by his teacher, Dorothy Rogers, and her involvement in school and community activities. Education in Action, dedicated to empowering young people to be informed and active leaders in their communities, hosts the Lone Star Leadership Academy.

Wyatt’s Texas state representative and senator was notified of his accomplishment. Wyatt visited the Austin offices of his state legislators while attending the program.

Joined by a delegation of outstanding students from across the state of Texas, Wyatt developed his leadership skills at the Academy while learning about the great state of Texas and its leaders. He learned about future career and internship opportunities and visited historically, politically and geographically significant sites, including the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, LBJ Library, the Alamo, the Institute of Texan Cultures, Witte Museum State Cemetery, State Capitol, Supreme Court and Aquarina Springs. Additional activities included an evening around the campfire with a cowboy storyteller, IMAX Theater, bat watching on the Lone Star Riverboat, Natural Bridge Caverns and a farewell program.

The Lone Star Academy provides unique opportunities for outstanding fourth-eighth-graders to learn about the spirit of Texas. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem-solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills in Leadership Groups. In addition, participants have fun meeting other outstanding students and making new friends, while adding to their resume of academic achievements, developing leadership skills and bringing home a wealth of information to supplement what they are learning in school.

Additionally, Hadyn Kroen, son of Michael and Diana Kroen and a sixth-grader at Moreno Middle School, was also selected to travel to the Austin/San Antonio area also as a second-year participant of the Lone Star Leadership Academy this summer.

Hadyn attended his first Leadership Academy in July 2011.
