The Refugio City Council approved requests from hotel motel tax money and to place a marker around King’s Park and dedicate the statue.

Representing the Refugio Fair Board, Ruben Garcia, council member, requested $1,600 from hotel-motel tax money to advertise for a heifer show being hosted by the 4-H Booster Club on Saturday, April 18, for scholarships. The event is the first of what is hoped to be an annual show called the Refugio Booster Bash.

“We hope to make it into a two-day event,” Garcia said. “This year, we’re hoping that people will stay over for the heifer show on Sunday.”

Rosemary Kelley, representing the Refugio County Historical Society received$1,500 from the hotel fund for fliers, bookmarks and information that will be placed across Texas advertising and highlighting the county.

Kelley also brought to the council’s attention that the marker at King’s Park has never been dedicated.

“It’s my understanding that the statue was erected in 1936 but city officials didn’t like it so it was never dedicated,” Kelley said. “They also planted trees around it so nobody would see it.”

Karen Watts, council member, asked parks supervisor Kevin Shreckengost to investigate ways to improve the appearance of the area around the statue since plants had been planted numerous times but failed to thrive. Patterned concrete, bricks, and rocks were suggested as acceptable alternatives to plants.

There was a time when the trees made the park a beautiful place, not only visually but to walk through and enjoy. A Gazebo on the south side of the statue added to its aesthetic qualities. Dedicating the park and its memorial to King is an excellent step toward enhancing its significance for the present and the future. While there may never have been a formal dedication when the park was built in 1936, there never was a question in the minds of Refugians of that time and later as to its importance in remembering and honoring the town's marvelous heritage.
