A maintenance crew at Skidmore-Tynan works to clear a downed tree recently. It took time but the district was able to make repairs to the schools using inhouse labor following this late June storm.
Damage values exceeded $100,000 and included items such as baseball field fence collapse, batting cages demolished, scoreboard collapse, concession stand roof totaled, and a large tree uprooted.
The district’s maintenance supervisor, Joe DeLuna, said, “Even growing up in hurricane areas, it’s been a while since I’ve seen the force of the wind do things like lift an entire roof off of a building and bend I-beam steel scoreboard supports to a full 90-degree angle.”
Just as impressive is the fact that nearly all of the repairs and replacement efforts have been completed without additional cost to the district in these tough economic times.
Steve Batchelor, an S-T graduate and district staff member who also assisted with the repairs in the storm’s aftermath, added, “In this district, we just know how to address problems without always throwing money at them.
“It starts at the top and just works its way through our district.”
The district has almost all of the damages fixed and ready for athletes to return to school.
