The Live Oak County Grand Jury indicted one individual three times and six others were indicted for escape, forgery, burglary and illegal hunting. Edward Ayshford Moore, 38, of San Antonio was indicted three times. The first indictment has nine counts of aggravated assault threat with a deadly weapon. The second indictment is for aggravated assault bodily injury with deadly weapon. The third indictment has four counts of evading arrest with motor vehicle and. Each count represents a different vehicle he allegedly hit, Live Oak Sheriff Larry Busby said.
On May 19, 2008 Moore led Live Oak County officers on a high-speed chase, Busby said. The driver, was spotted by a Federal Treasury agent “hitting and sideswiping several cars,” including the agent’s car, on IH-37 as he drove south, read the LOC Sheriff’s complaint log. The federal agent dialed 911 at 10:32 a.m. to report the driver (Moore) and stayed with him as he exited IH-37 at U.S. 59, the complaint log continued.
“At times he was driving in excess of 100-miles-per-hour and was weaving in and out of traffic. Moore continued north until he reached the Hwy 72/IH-37 overpass. Moore cut through the medium near mile-marker 69 and began traveling south. Suddenly, Moore turned around at U.S. 59 and began driving north. The officers continued to pursue him and called for road spikes to stop him,” said Live Oak County Chief Deputy Glenn Thompson.
He crashed head-on with another vehicle after his tires were shot and a stray bullet hit the calf of his leg, Busby said. He allegedly hit a car with a female driver. “The driver of the vehicle was alert and took evasive action by turning her vehicle away. The brunt of the crash hit the passenger side of her vehicle. The woman was not seriously hurt and neither were her two Chihuahuas,” said Thompson. Medical aid was rendered and Moore was arrested by Thompson, according to the LOC complaint log. Moore was charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and felony evading arrest. Bond was set at $25,000 for the aggravated assault threat and $15,000 for the evading arrest charge. Upon indictment, District Court Judge Mike Welborn continued Moore on the same bonds.
Duane Phillip Ranthum, 50, was indicted for escape. Ranthum escaped from Live Oak County deputies on Christmas Eve while working as a trusty. “We learned he went up the railroad tracks. He was found at the Comfort Inn in Nashville [Tenn.] and was captured by Nashville Police. He had frostbite on his fingers from being out in the freezing weather,” Busby said. “Ranthum’s fugitive from justice charges are ‘enhanced’ and he faces 25-99 years because he is a habitual. No bond was allowed,” Busby said.
Robert Diaz, 19, of Three Rivers was indicted for theft of a firearm. In January he was indicted for burglary of a building for the alleged burglary of Bar H on Sept. 23. “The theft charge was added because he sold one of the guns,” Busby said. Upon indictment Welborn issued a capias for his arrest and a $5,000 bond. According to LOC arrest records, Diaz was arrested on Feb 11 at 8:34 a.m. He posted bond and was released same day.
Daniel Elem Huebotter, aka Bubba, 21, of Three Rivers was indicted on two counts of illegal hunting. Count one is for hunting at night-enhanced and count two is for hunting with light-enhanced. Busby said, “This should have been a misdemeanor but he has been convicted for same offense in the past. Now the charge is a state jail felony.” Welborn issued a capias and $2,500 bond. Huebotter was arrested on Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. He posted bond and was released later that day, according to LOC arrest records.
Travis Dean Preston, 40, of Three Rivers was indicted for assault bodily injury/family member-enhanced. Around midnight of Sept. 18 and 19, 2008, Preston allegedly assaulted his partner, according to LOC Sheriff’s records. “Normally, it would have been a Class A misdemeanor but he had a previous conviction of the same charge so it is a third degree felony,” Busby said. Three Rivers Police Officer William Jones responded to the call at the School Road address, according to LOC Sheriff’s records. “He got all the information and placed Preston under arrest. When he was through noting the information he found it happened at a nearby travel stop,” Busby said. Sheriff’s Investigator Charlie Stroleny followed up on Oct. 1 because the alleged assault occurred out of the city limits, Busby said. Preston was magistrated by George West Municipal Judge Patricia Lanford. She set bond at $5,000. He posted bond and was out on Sept. 19. Upon indictment, Welborn continued him on the same bond.
Roseanna Lee Rodriguez, 18, was indicted for forgery. “On June 13, 2008, a George West woman reported her 17-year-old daughter’s checkbook had been stolen at school and that a check had come in that had been cashed at the Super S (George West) for $168.53. The check was written on June 9,” Busby said. Upon indictment, Welborn ordered a capias for Rodriguez’s arrest and set bond at $2,500. LOC Sheriff’s records indicate Rodriguez was in custody by 8:50 a.m. on Feb. 12 and was released two hours later after posting bond.
