BEEVILLE— There was nothing inherently different about Ernesto Garza when he walked into the newspaper office with a piece of foil folded in half.

An older man who attends La Amistad Adult Daycare, Garza walked in, sat down and said, “I have something to show you.”

“I was sitting just like I am now,” Garza said. “I ate more than half of my taco, then a fly was flying around, so I grabbed the flyswatter, and I hit it, and when I looked down, I saw it.”

It was the face of Jesus looking up at him from his half-eaten tortilla.

“I’d been eating it and hadn’t seen it,” Garza said. “It made me a little nervous. I was wondering what was going on here.”

Nothing like that had ever happened at the center before, though they do have Bible study and prayer meetings for the clients.

And, while it’s the first occurrence at the center, Jesus has appeared on a tortilla before.

Just this past March, a man in New Mexico saw an image of Christ on his tortilla, on Ash Wednesday no less.

And a film titled Tortilla Heaven, starring George Lopez, is about the very subject.

But another odd thing happened before Jesus’ face appeared to Garza.

“I usually get up and go to the counter to get my taco,” Garza recalled. “But this morning, a little girl, about five years old, brought my tacos to my table.”

A 5-year-old girl he had never seen before until the fateful Wednesday morning.

“I know her grandma,” he said. “But I didn’t know the little girl.”

So, what will become of the Jesus tortilla?

Garza has it wrapped up in the refrigerator for now. “I’m just going to wait and see what happens,” he said.

With some calling it a miracle and a blessing and others claiming it’s just a coincidence, one thing is certain. The Lord works in mysterious, and sometimes delicious, ways.
