Every new school year brings a new start to the Mighty Trojan Band. In the last two weeks, the color guard and drum line have been rehearsing in their camps.

At the beginning of summer, the band competed in Austin at the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Contest. They came home with six solo medals. Ismael Garza was given an Outstanding Performer award on his marimba solo. Out of the 24,000 musician only 252 received this award.

“This is the first time that I can remember in our band’s history that a band student received this honor,” says band director Jaime Vela.

The show theme for the 2012 season is entitled The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies). The selection of songs portrays the energy the band students get from their surroundings and from within. They invite the community to stay during football halftime for their performance. The band spends many hours rehearsing, memorizing and marching to get ready for the season of football games, parades and competitions.

“It takes dedication to work in the mental capacity of playing music and the physical one in the South Texas heat,” Vela added.

This year, they have added a new band director, Lisa Avalos, from Brownsville. She is a woodwind specialist who majored in clarinet. She will assist and have performing groups at both the high school and middle school.

Because of the high school moving back to eight periods, students are encouraged to enroll in the mariachi and classical guitar program. Many graduates continue to perform in mariachi and their education in classical guitar at the college level for many years.

Summer band for incoming freshman and new band members will start on Monday, Aug. 6, at 8 a.m. at the high school band hall. Returning band students will start on Aug. 8 at 8 a.m. The band booster meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 6 a.m. in the band hall. Questions about rehearsal can be directed to Jaime Vela at the high school at 362-6000, ext. 5070.

“I’m excited about starting a new year,” Vela says. “We are planning new things for the field and parades. Thank you to our community of family, school and business support. It means so much to the members of our Mighty Trojan Band.”
