On Thursday, Aug. 16, the Wednesday Luncheon Club met at noon at the Beeville Country Club. After the luncheon, hostess Jonnie Jordan introduced the speaker, Dr. Beatriz Espinoza, president of Coastal Bend College.

Dr. Espinoza spoke on women in education leadership roles. She attributes much of her success to the encouragement of her family, especially her parents. Her father wanted his daughters to explore all opportunities open to women, not just the traditional roles. She explained that there is a need to empower young girls early in life, encouraging them to find their own talents and develop their own voice. Family support is essential for students to continue their education.

Coastal Bend College works to see that all its students are successful. Support services at CBC, such as the Upward Bound program and Talent Search, provide assistance to middle and high school students who may be the first in their families to complete high school and plan to attend college. There is a role for community organizations like the Wednesday Luncheon Club too. Dr. Espinoza emphasized the need for female students to connect with women in leadership roles in our community while they are at studying at CBC. Successful women need to engage with students and share their own talents and real-world experiences.

She closed with a brief reading from a small book, Girls’ Rule, that, Dr. Espinoza says, stays on her desk. After a brief business meeting, the group adjourned.
