The junior varsity Lady Trojan softball team hosted 11 other teams last week in the annual Beeville JV Classic softball tournament. The Yoakum Lady Bulldogs won the event on Saturday with a victory over Seguin.

The Lady Trojans managed to go 1-1 in Friday’s pool play. The Beeville girls jumped on the Ray Lady Texans in their first game of the day. The time limit of one hour expired with the Lady Trojans holding an 11-1 lead.

A first inning explosion of six runs paved the way for the easy win. The Lady Trojans got their first six batters on base via base hits, a hit batsman and one Ray error. Kristen Almeida, Skylar Nelson and Kimberly Wolfe had the hits for the Beeville attack. Almeida was on the mound for the Lady Trojans and took the win.

“We got some strong pitching and we hit the ball well. The girls aren’t afraid to swing the bats,” said Beeville coach Ophelia De Los Santos.

The Lady Trojans ran themselves out of another big inning a little later in the game with a couple of poor decisions on the base paths.

“We do need to work on our base running and work on some situational problems with the girls,” De Los Santos said.

The Lady Trojans played the Victoria Lady Vipers in their second game of pool play on Friday. The Vipers took advantage of a couple of errors and also hit really well in the second inning to score seven runs and they went on to a 10-6 win in three innings (when the time limit expired).

The Lady Trojans made a game of it and held a 2-1 lead after one inning. The big second inning from Victoria was the difference maker. Beeville got back-to-back doubles from Nelson and Samantha Valencia to highlight a four-run second that brought the Beeville girls closer at 8-6. Two more Victoria runs made it across the plate in the third and the time limit of one hour expired before the Lady Trojans could mount another threat.

In Saturday’s bracket finals, the Beeville girls faced the Alice Coyotes in their first game of the day. The contest was close but the Lady Trojans edged the Coyotes 4-3 behind the pitching of Almeida.

“We’re still learning about softball. Every win we get is a confidence booster and we will get better as the season continues,” said Beeville coach Larry Lollar.

The Lady Trojans met the Woodsboro Lady Eagles in the tournament’s second place game. It was tied at 1-1 in the early going but the Lady Trojans came through with three late runs as the bottom of the batting order came through for Beeville. The final was a 4-1 victory that earned the Lady Trojans second place in the tournament standings.

The Lady Matadors from Seguin battled the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs in the first place final contest. The Yoakum girls captured the win and the first place tournament trophy.
