Bee County grand jurors indicted a 27-year-old burglary suspect when they met last week.

Steven Guajardo Servantes was charged with burglarizing the home of a local man on Oct. 2, 2008. Deputy Capt. Dan Caddell, who investigated the case, said the charge of burglary of a habitation normally is a second degree felony but the charge against the defendant was enhanced to a first degree felony because Servantes has a previous felony conviction as juvenile.

If convicted of the first degree felony, Servantes could face from five to 99 years or life in prison and a fine of as much as $10,000.

The charge against Servantes was enhanced because he had been convicted of aggravated assault, serious bodily injury on Jan. 6, 1997, in juvenile court in Bee County.

District Judge Joel Johnson set bond on the suspect at $25,000.

Servantes also was named in a separate indictment on a charge of retaliation, enhanced to a second degree felony.

Second degree felonies are punishable by a prison term of from two to 20 years in prison and a fine of as much as $10,000.

According to deputies, Servantes hit and dragged a local woman by her hair for reporting a crime.

That charge was enhanced because of the same previous felony conviction listed in the other indictment.

Bond on that indictment also was $25,000.
