Brother Jake Bible carried a wooden cross through downtown Beeville on Thursday on his way to "God knows where."

Bro. Jake said he has been walking “for the grace of God” for the past several years, and has traveled as far north as Oregon and New York state.

His present walk began in Waxahachie, Texas, and he has trekked north to Dallas County, then turned southwest and traveled through the Austin/San Antonio area before heading southeast to Victoria.

On Wednesday night he found himself sleeping in a park in Berclair.

"I do not walk in a straight line like many people who carry crosses do,” he said. “Instead, I go where God directs me to go.”

If someone stops and offers him a ride, he’ll take it — even if it takes him in another direction, he said.

“Maybe God wanted me to meet these people, or go in that direction, to share his word.”

Bro. Jake belongs to the “underground church,” which spurns traditional religious practices, such as attending church, and instead spreads God’s word individual by individual and community by community, as did the 12 disciples of Jesus.
