GOLIAD COUNTY – A Chevrolet Avalanche pickup believed to be transporting illegal immigrants drove through a barbed-wire fence on U.S. Highway 59 while being pulled over by a DPS Trooper and escaped authorities Wednesday afternoon.

According to Goliad County Sheriff Kirby Brumby, the pickup drove through at the fence about six miles west of Goliad and went through a pasture before re-entering the highway and escaping eastward toward Goliad.

"The DPS officer stopped at the fence line where they went in and called for backup," Brumby said. "By the time backup and the dogs got there, the truck went through another fence and exited and disappeared."

A helicopter was also part of the search.
