Chaplain Styers presented a program on what to do when visiting someone in the hospital. He covered some of the do’s and don’ts.
The don’ts include not telling your own or someone else’s horror story related to the patient’s current situation. He said the main thing to do was to give them hope.
He also shared that instead of simply asking “How are you?” you could ask, “What kind of day are you having?” or “Is today better or worse than yesterday?” Chaplain Styers gave many other helpful points.
Marion Williams’s was soliciting volunteers for The Rotary Foundation to help with funding.
The Coastal Bend Community Foundation does contribute for our area to Rotary.
We have in the past as a fundraiser and service project bought U.S. flags and displayed them at homes and businesses for a fee.
He explained that credit card companies like MasterCard can setup an automatic gift. Rotary will even accept airline miles.
Another way to give would be to have Rotary as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy or as a percentage to the Foundation.
Louie Alaniz introduced from Coastal Bend College, girl’s volleyball head coach Larry Lollar who had three players with him.
Their first tournament was Aug. 31 at the college. Colt Walker, coach for the men’s basketball team, talked about his job of recruiting new players. He speaks to high school coaches everywhere to find players. Oct. 22 is their first home game.
Co-captains of the college’s soccer team were present and invited the public to attend their game at the field behind the Boys and Girls Club.
James Sales is a prosecutor and running for district attorney in Nueces County.
Currently, his role is Bee County border prosecutor.
The government has set up grants for border prosecutors. There are about 17 prosecutors statewide that are under this grant. They fight the infusion of drugs, guns and illegal immigrants and work closely with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The Honorable Judge Janna Whatley spoke to the Rotarians about the 343rd State District Court that she presides over.
The district includes Aransas, Bee, Live Oak, McMullen and San Patricio counties.
She has practiced family law, civil law and criminal law and was appointed to the Nueces River Authority board of directors in 1993 by Gov. Ann Richards. Whatley has served in various county and community leadership roles, including Leadership San Patricio and the Dispute Resolution Service in Corpus Christi.
Dr. Bea Espinoza was introduced as a new member to Rotary. She is president of Coastal Bend College.
Rotary meets every Wednesday at noon at the Beeville Country Club.
