At approximately 12:42 p.m. on March 2, Dewayne Carroll, a City of Three Rivers employee, came back from lunch early and was sitting in a city-owned pickup cleaning the dashboard.
As he was wiping the dash, he looked over at his own pickup, that was two parking spaces over, and noticed someone in it. “I got out and started toward him; he got in his own car, a white Chevy Cavalier and drove off,” Carroll stated. “I got the last three digits of his license plate and called the sheriff’s office. It was broad daylight and there were people all around. The bank (First State Bank) is right there too.”
Three Rivers Police Chief Vance Roberts said, “I made contact with the complainant [Carroll] and he advised me that he observed a man inside his pickup taking the CD radio out of the dash. A BOLO (“Be On the Look Out”) was put out on the police radio at approximately 12:53 p.m.”
George West Police Officer Jason Lee spotted a vehicle fitting the description of the suspect’s vehicle, according to the police report. He (Lee) pulled over Cantu on U.S. 281 in front of the Alco store. Within seconds, Roberts and TR Police Cpl. J.R. Rodriguez made the location, according to the police report.
The CD player that was taken out of the pickup during the burglary was located in the back seat, Roberts said. “We also located a jack handle in the pickup that was used to pry the door open on the pickup to gain access into the cab. The suspect and the stolen radio were taken back to Three Rivers, where the suspect was identified as the offender by the complainant, as well as the radio that had been taken out of the pickup,” Roberts added.
