Saturday’s junior varsity soccer matches against the visiting Harlandale Indians had plenty of late game excitement.

The JHS girls used two late second half goals by Alisa Patterson to capture a 2-1 win. In the afternoon’s second game, the Indians fought back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the contest with two late scores.

“The girls really pulled together on Saturday to beet the McCollum JV team,” said JV coach Melinda Trevino.

The Lady Trojans and visiting Indians battled to a scoreless tie through the first half of play. Neither team could penetrate the other’s defense. The Lady Trojans controlled the tempo for the most part but their shots on goal were just wide or high. The Harlandale girls were also playing a good brand of defense and kept the offensive threats to a minimum.

The second half was a slightly different matter. The visitors scored first with just 6:36 left to play in the match. Alisa Patterson then used her speed and elusiveness to get behind the Indian defenders twice over the next four plus minutes to score both goals for the Lady Trojans on breakaways.

The tying score came at the 4:03 mark of the final half and then the go-ahead goal hit the back of the net with just 1:43 left to play.

The Trojans and Indians each scored once in the first half. Harlandale got on the board first with 3:20 left in the first 35 minutes. It was a kick from the left side that made the corner of the net before keeper Peyton Tabb could get a hand on it. The Trojans’ Jose Amador tied things up just 27 seconds later on a breakaway.

Tabb kept it a 1-1 game with a good save on a Indian chance that had him one-on-one with a Harlandale forward.

The second half looked to be all Trojans. The Beeville duo of Jacob Gomez and Amador combined for two early scores to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead. Gomez took a crossing pass from Amador at the 32:37 mark of the second half and put the short kick into the back of the net to put the Trojans in front 2-1.

Bobby Rice and Gomez helped out on the next Beeville score as a couple of passes found Amador wide open in front of the Harlandale goal for the second goal within a minute for the young Trojans.

The Indians were now trailing 3-1 but there was still over 30 minutes left to play. Harlandale got within one as a kick bounced in front and was kicked past keeper Tabb and into the corner of the net at the 12:19 mark.

An Indian cross kick in front of the Beeville net with just 1:36 left was kicked into the back corner of the net and past Tabb for the tie.

The final was 3-3.

“The guys played well on both offense and defense today,” said JV coach Julie Blackwell.

“Josh Parkman played really well defensively and Tabb was very good in goal for us.”

Coach Blackwell also wanted to express her thanks for all the fans’ and parents’ support over the season. Saturday was the last home game of the year for the Trojan JV. The boys will close out their season on Friday in Floresville.
