This is the question that Jesus asks of James and John when they ask him for positions of honor when he comes into his kingdom. The other disciples are mad at James and John, probably because they got to Jesus before the others could. Jesus then goes on to teach the disciples that true honor and greatness in the kingdom are tied to service not power.

So what does this mean for us? Dreaming dreams of heavenly grandeur like James and John we too easily answer the question, “Are you able to drink the cup?” Without understanding the implications for our life. When we drink from the cup of Jesus’ suffering we are called to take up our appointed cross of sacrifice and suffering on behalf of the world, allowing God’s glory to shine forth redemptively through us and in us.
