George West’s annual National Night Out Crime Prevention 2012 Block Party featured plenty of kids’ activities, including an obstacle course for young drivers and the city’s new playground equipment. Youth also got to experience fingerprinting and other activities, including lots of good food and drinks and meeting the city’s first responders to emergencies.
GEORGE WEST – The City Park was filled with people for the annual National Night Out Crime Prevention 2012 Block Party on Tuesday evening, Oct. 23.
The party is an opportunity for residents to meet and get to know local law enforcement.
“I think it was fabulous,” said George West City Manager Sandra Martinez.
“It was a good turnout. The chief and park board took it to the park, and it was great,” she said.
The city spent $68,000 for new playground equipment earlier this year, and that equipment was used heavily by the youth at the event. The money came from the general fund and sales tax revenues.
“The last two months we received over $100,000 (a month). It’s the first time we’ve done that,” Martinez said.
More plans to upgrade parks are in the works, too, she noted, particularly Cactus Park near the museum.
In addition to the playground equipment, many vendors and youth activities were available.
Special guest speaker at the Block Party was state Rep. Jose Aliseda, who is the district attorney-elect for Bee, Live Oak and McMullen counties.
Entertainment was provided by the band Pear Ratz and Mrs. Gerth’s Kids Choir.
Others at the event were Sheriff Larry Busby and his deputies, George West Police Chief Ray Garcia, George West Longhorn cheerleaders, George West band, Mayor Sylvia Steele, George West Volunteer Fire Department, George West Police Department and other law enforcement personnel, including Department of Public Safety troopers.
