The streets are to be closed from 11 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. for the popular event, said Beeville Main Street Manager Molly Young.
“Last year we almost ran out of room for cars,” Young said, commenting on the success of the event.
“It’s a lot of fun. A lot of people will be coming from the Valley,” Young said.
Much of the activity will be taking place in the parking lot west of the 300 block of North Washington Street, Young said.
The council also granted the tentative use of the Depot Pavilion, whish is being built in the parking lot.
However, if the engineer has not signed off on the pavilion construction, the facility will effectively still belong to the contractor, Ram II. That will mean that the city does not have the authority to approve its use.
Young said she is hoping the pavilion will be signed over to the city by then and it can be used by those holding the car show.
The pavilion and the area around it are expected to become a popular venue for gatherings in future years as more events are scheduled for the parking lot west of the 300 block of North Washington Street.
Councilmen asked Young if some of their concerns had been addressed involving the construction of the pavilion.
She said the engineer, Mark Mahoney of Urban Engineering, was aware of each problem and he had been working with the contractors to have those concerns corrected. Young said the pavilion was being painted this week in an effort to complete the project.
City Councilman David Carabajal questioned some of the support measures in the pavilion roof. But City Building Inspector Lanny Holland said he had seen to it that those concerns also would be handled by the contractor.
In other business, the council voted to:
— Grant a special use permit to Brenda Bond for her property at 804 E. Jones St. Bond wants to open a counseling office at that location.
— Accept a report from the Bee County Western Week Celebrations organization on how it spent money the city granted it from its hotel and motel tax fund.
— Approve a recommendation from the city’s Traffic Safety Commission for the creation of a handicapped parking space on the east side of the 100 block of South St. Mary’s Street.
— Approve a change order of $3,083 for extra work on the roof of the C.M. “Smitty” Smith Fire Station and authorize a $27,979 payment for that work.
— Authorize the sale of a surplus ambulance unit to the City of Taft for $1.
