Von Dohlen family not renewing lease to Goliad Pharmacy

Dear Editor,

Residents and visitors to Goliad have recently noticed that the Von Dohlen Building no longer has a pharmacy located in it.

My family partnership owns the Von Dohlen Building and has chosen not to renew the lease for Goliad Pharmacy.

The Von Dohlen Building, located on the square in downtown Goliad, has been a Goliad business hub and home to a pharmacy since the early 1900’s. Negotiations for lease renewal were stopped when the majority owners of the pharmacy insisted on stocking and dispensing certain medicines that end innocent human life.

The drugs in question include the Morning After Pill, Ella (similar to RU486) and Depo-Provera. All three drugs are marketed as contraceptives but are in fact abortifacient drugs, meaning they can cause a newly created child to be aborted. In addition, these drugs can have numerous side effects including the risk of blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, stroke and certain forms of cancer.

Nobody knows better than me how important a pharmacy is in a small town like Goliad. But if it’s selling the wrong drugs, that cannot be acceptable.

Healthcare in general and pharmacy in particular are changing rapidly. Most new drugs are wonderful discoveries that help people. However, some drugs have long term negative impacts on patients. As a pharmacist myself, sharing the truth and reality about certain drugs’ effects on the health and safety of women and respecting the dignity of every human life is a professional responsibility. It is also a deeply held belief of mine.

I would like to encourage the people of Goliad to join me in standing up for the right to life of unborn children by letting the owners and employees of Goliad Pharmacy know how they feel and ask them not to sell such products.

For more information, read my open letter to the people of Goliad, which is printed in this newspaper.

Tim Von Dohlen

Sigh. It's one thing to not renew the lease of the pharmacy because you don't agree with what they sell, but to have the audacity to "take a stand" against them because they sell contraception? This is treading into ridiculous territory.

How long has the Goliad Pharmacy or the many other stores in town been selling condoms? The last I checked, you can't get pregnant without a few sperm knocking on the door. And when an effective male contraceptive pill becomes popular, what businesses will Mr. Von Dohlen choose to not lease to then?

This is a free country and this guy Von Dohlen has a perfect right to lease to whomever he wants and believe in what he wants. Those of us who don't like his approach have a right to turn the other cheek...and shop elsewhere...hopefully at the new location of Goliad Pharmacy.

Any other businesses this guy owns that the good folks in Goliad can boycott?

I believe that would be Von Dohlen Ford in Goliad. It seems Herr Von Dohlen has forgotten the first rule of doing business in a small community is "don't p@#s off the customers". Oh well, Dave Moore Ford in Beeville isn't that far away.

I'm grateful that the Goliad pharmacy is providing this form of contraception and wish them success in their new location. When a young woman has been violated, she shouldn't be forced to have to search for medication to terminate an unwanted forced pregnancy. Mr. Von Dohlen is obviously enjoying his role as a control freak over women's lives and he should be ashamed that he is using his role as a landlord and pharmacist to promote his personal agenda.

Besides, we don't want any more unwed mothers to give birth or we will get the monthly reminder from Salty about the number of children with parents with different surnames that appeared in the birth announcements.

My advice for young females in their child-bearing years is to leave south Texas. A lot of the men from the area just want to keep you barefoot and pregnant. Count Mr. Von Dohlen as one of them.
