BEEVILLE – Just because the doors were open on Wednesday afternoon doesn’t mean the status has changed – at least not yet.

The Rialto Theater is still closed but some interior repairs were being done this week to get the theater ready for an upcoming open house.

According to Mark Parsons, president of the Hall-Rialto Preservation Association, no one has bought the place, but the Beck Bros. firm has donated some materials and manpower to help get the place ready for the next open house.

“I wanted to do what I could to get the project going again,” Robert Beck said.

The theater will be open from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, as part of the Holly Jolly Christmas festivities in downtown Beeville. Beck has the hope that people seeing the theater open for a day and being able to come in and tour it might renew interest in fundraising for the lengthy project.

The renovation of the building has been ongoing more than a decade and the Becks’ mother was one of the original citizens who showed an interest in refurbishing the building.

Over the years, a new roof has been constructed and air conditioning installed, but there is still much left before the building reaches the potential that Beck thinks it has.

He calls the theater “a gem” and says “it is a true asset to downtown.”

The open house will give people a chance to come in, see the theater, enjoy refreshments and hopefully see some of what Beck sees.

Also, a classic Christmas movie will be shown on the screen.

The Preservation Association still needs to raise additional funds to complete the refurbishing of the building.

Parsons said the infrastructure has been fixed but what is left is “cosmetic stuff” now.

He gave examples of new carpet and seating as part of those additions needed.

The Preservation Association members are already planning their next fundraiser though. A play will be staged in March and auditions for the production will begin in January.
