Trojan netters claim Port Aransas ‘Spring Break’ tourney

The A.C. Jones Trojan tennis team scored two golds and two silvers last weekend at the Port Aransas “Spring Break” tennis invitational.

In boys’ doubles, Steven Ambriz and Chris Garza continued their winning ways by going undefeated through the tournament. Ambriz and Garza captured the gold by defeating Thomas and Davis (Aransas Pass) in the finals, 6-1, 6-4.

Also participating in the boys’ doubles were LeAnthony Salazar and Tim Shane.

In girls’ doubles, Lady Trojans Hannah Stasny and Kayla Keys went 2-1 to claim the silver medal. In the quarterfinals, Stasny and Keys defeated Bishop and Haynes (St. Joseph’s), 6-2, 4-6 and 11-9. In the semifinals, the Beeville duo downed Kenighsberg and Lucke (Port Aransas), 6-4, 3-6 and 10-0. The Lady Trojans fell to Cooper and Oliver (St. Joseph’s) in the finals, 6-3 and 7-6.

Also participating from Beeville in girls’ doubles were Kristina Alvarado and Melody Shane. The local ladies went 1-1 in the tournament, defeating Adams and Watson from AP, 8-5. In the semifinals, the eventual doubles’ champs, Cooper and Oliver, defeated Alvarado and Shane, 7-5 and 6-0.

In mixed doubles, Trojans Nick Waters and Ellen Addison brought home the gold with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kroll and Mead of St. Joseph’s. Waters and Addison went undefeated in the tournament to claim the gold medal.

In girls’ singles, Lady Trojan Kristen Coester brought home the silver medal, winning three of four matches before falling to Poojah Parikh (St. Joseph’s), 6-4, 7-5.

In boys’ singles, Scott Townsend went 2-1 in the tourney for Beeville. Townsend defeated David Mauro of Woodsboro, 8-0, and Ty White from Skidmore-Tynan, 8-1, before falling to Kasey Reed of PA, 8-5.

Trojan Eric Taylor went 1-1 for the tourney. Taylor defeated Clark Wilson (Port Aransas), 9-8 (7-5), before falling to Danny Denton (Austwell-Tivoli), 8-1.

The varsity tennis team will be in Kingsville on March 27.

In the junior varsity division, Trojan Caleb Traylor brought home the gold in boys’ singles. Traylor went 4-0. In the championship match, Traylor defeated Seth Adams of AP, 8-6.

Jesse Barrera went 1-1 for the tournament, defeating Eric Luera of Taft, 9-7, before falling to Adams, 8-4.

In girls’ singles, Megan Burris won the bronze medal, winning three out of four matches. Burris was defeated by the tournament champion Shelby Hathorn from John Paul II, 8-3, before fighting her way back to take third. Burris defeated Marcy Durham of AP, 8-2, to claim the bronze medal.

Other Trojans participating in the JV division included Malika Hennies and Marisela Ibarra. Ibarra went 1-1, defeating Emily Klein of Port Aransas, 9-8 (7-4), before falling to Brittany Garza from Skidmore-Tynan, 8-1.

The Trojan JV team will be at the Tuloso-Midway tournament on Tuesday.
