SKIDMORE — The Port Aransas Marlin basketball team saved its best for the final quarter as the visitors edged past the Bobcats on Friday night, 52-48, in a non-district match.

“It was a tough game to lose. I was happy with the effort that the kids gave,” said S-T head coach Adam Wollam.

“We start district Tuesday and feel that playing teams like Port A help us to get ready for the challenges of district.”

The Bobcats owned the first half, and they built upon their 24-15 halftime lead by outscoring the Marlins 13-9 right after the halftime break. The Bobcats were in command 37-24 with just eight minutes left.

The Marlins got hot and fought for their basketball lives in the fourth quarter. The visitors scorched the nets for 28 fourth quarter points while holding the ’Cats to 11 tallies. That erased the S-T lead and gave Port Aransas a come-from-behind victory.

The win improves the Marlins’ record to 12-4 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 12-3 with the district battles just around the corner.

Zeke Huerta led the Bobcats with 23 points in the contest. Erasmo Huerta followed with 16 tallies. Ryan Scott contributed four points for S-T. Johnathon Hernandez sank two points, and Brandon East recorded three.

The Bobcats hosted the San Diego Vaqueros on Tuesday night and will travel to Freer on Friday night to meet the Buckaroos.
