“At two different times, we had to battle back from 10 and seven points down. The girls did a great job of never giving up and always playing hard, fighting for the win,” said S-T head coach Joseph Grimes III.
The visitors led by four, 12-8, after one period and it was still in their hands 20-18 at the halftime break. The game remained close the entire way. The Vaqueros stretched their lead to four points, 32-28, by the end of the third period.
The S-T girls rallied late to outscore the San Diego girls 16-10 in the game’s final eight-minute period to overcome the slim lead the visitors had held all night.
Mari Martinez led the S-T scoring with 16 points. Amber Hughlett recorded 12. Zehila Frias added seven markers. Courtney Leonard followed with six and Khelsey Corrigan closed the S-T scoring with three points.
The Lady Cats were in Freer on Friday for the final game before taking a break for Christmas. The S-T girls will resume play on Dec. 28 at the Ben Bolt tournament.
