CORPUS CHRISTI — In a dual wrestling match on Dec. 29, the Trojan varsity team pinned the host Ray Texans to the mat in a 41-27 win. The Lady Trojans did not fare quite as well, dropping their match to the Lady Texans 21-12.

The varsity boys competition started at the 132-pound level. Beeville’s Tristan Longoria fought a good battle, but lost in a close, 2-0 decision to his Texan opponent. Trojan Seth Aguire (138 pounds) then won in a walk-over to put the Trojans on the scoreboard and into the lead at 6-3.

In the 145-pound match, Trojan Nathaniel Barris was pinned by his Ray foe in the second period to give the lead back to the Texans, 9-6. The next two Trojan grapplers, Cordell Aguirre at 160 pounds and Jeremy Ramirez at 170 pounds, both pinned their Texan competitors to make it an 18-9 match score in favor of the Beeville varsity.

Ray captured the 182-pound class by pin fall over Trojan Ernesto Gomez in the second period of a tough, close match. The Texans did not field wrestlers in either of the next two weight classes (195 and 220 pounds) as Brent Puga and Elijah Green earned credit for the wins and upped the score to 30-15

The Trojans do not have a 285-pound class wrestler, and the Texans improved their score in that match. Beeville’s Lupe Banda did wrestle an exhibition match with the Texans’ super-heavyweight Anthony Cuellar and pinned the big Ray wrestler in the first period of their match.

At the 113-pound division, the Texans again won by default to edge closer to the Trojans at 30-27. That left just two more matches in the dual meet.

Trojan Rogelio Salazar, at 120 pounds, pinned his opponent with a quick first period maneuver that left the Texan’s shoulders flat on the mat. In the final match, Beeville’s Mario Perez, at 126 pounds, earned a technical fall in the second period to make the final score a 41-27 win.

“We didn’t have a full lineup tonight, but we made up for it for the guys we had in there,” said head coach Terry Foster.

In an abbreviated match, the Lady Trojans fell short 21-12 to the Lady Texans.

At 102 pounds, Lady Trojan Danielle Perez won by forfeit. Amanda Puga also earned forfeit points in her 138-pound division. Mandy Maldonado, at 119 pounds, lost to her Lady Texan foe in the first period on a pin fall. Brianna Gobel wrestled for three full periods against her 128-pound Ray opponent. Gobel led 5-2 after the first period, but the Lady Texan refused to quit and eventually earned a close 6-5 victory.

The Lady Trojans still led 12-9 entering the final two matches. Heidi Rodriguez lost in the second round to put the Rays girls in front and a walkover default in the 185-class gave the Lady Texans the match.

“The girls really showed some improvement and wrestled well in their matches,” Foster said.

The Trojan varsity wrestlers were in San Antonio on Thursday night to meet district foe San Antonio Highlands. The next home match will be on Jan. 15 when the Ray Texans visit Beeville’s Marion B. Horton Gymnasium.
