PORT LAVACA — After a slow start, the Lady Trojan varsity basketball team got things going the right way and captured a 46-38 victory over the Sandies on Friday night.

“The goal for this game was to get everyone involved,” said Lady Trojan head coach Katina Walker.

The home team eased in front 11-7 by the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Trojans played better defense and began to hit their shots in the second quarter to help turn things around. The Lady Trojans outscored the Sandies 14-6 to earn a three-point advantage, 21-18, at the end of the first half.

The teams went back and forth in the third period, but the Beeville girls added one point to their margin by scoring 15 points to take a 36-29 lead into the final stanza.

The pace slowed as the Lady Trojans used some time off the clock to keep the Sandies at bay. The Lady Trojans scored 10 fourth quarter points while holding the Sandies to a mere seven. The Calhoun rally never materialized, and the Beeville girls lifted their overall record to 21-5 and their district mark to 3-1 with the win.

“We did a great job of controlling Calhoun’s inside game and made someone else try and beat us. Ciara, Theresa, Brennan and Paige were able to clean up underneath the basket as well as power it in when posting up,” said Walker.

Victoria Elizalde burned the Port Lavaca nets with 29 points to lead all scorers. on defense, Elizalde came up with six steals to go along with her scoring and also dished out four assists. Ciara Garcia followed with seven points and nine rebounds on the night, while Theresa Amador hit for six points and hauled down seven rebounds. Brennan Holder supplied four points and helped out clearing the glass with nine rebounds. Amador and Elizalde each had one three-pointer in the tilt.

Tori Munoz and Krsytal Cuellar were great on the defensive end for us We have to continue to step up our game as we make our way through district,” Walker said.

The Lady Trojans played host to the Calallen Wildcats on Tuesday evening and will visit Tuloso-Midway on Friday night.
