The Lady Cats and Lady Owls began the varsity show. It was a slow-paced contest right from the start. Neither team shot very well, but the S-T girls were playing some tough defense. The Bee County girls led 10-4 after the first eight minutes.
Only 11 points were scored in the second period and the Owls got seven of those to creep back into the contest and trail by three, 14-11, at the half.
The Lady Cats came out of the locker rooms ready to go in the third period, hitting 18 points while holding the Owls to nine. That gave the home team a comfortable 32-20 advantage.
The pace slowed in the fourth period as the Lady Cats protected their lead. The Owls tried to rally but managed to cut just two points off the S-T lead as the Lady Cats emerged with a 38-28 victory.
The win improves the Lady Cats to 12-9 on the season and 4-1 in district.
“It was great to walk off the floor with a win over Odem. We struggled at times in this game but we were able to get some good scoring opportunities in third quarter,” said head coach Joseph Grimes III.
“Playing some good defense in the second half really helped us out.”
Khelsey Corrigan produced a team-high eight points on the night. Amber Hughlett and Zehila Frias followed with seven markers each in the balanced S-T scoring attack. Mari Martinez and Courtney Leonard both hit for six points. Naomi Garza sank two.
In the varsity boys’ game, the visitors could not keep pace with the running and gunning Bobcats. The S-T boys carved out a 19-9 lead after the first eight minutes and added another 10 points to their lead by capturing the second period scoring 21-11. That made it a Bobcat margin of 20 points, 40-20, entering the third quarter.
The Bobcats continued their dominance in the second half, hitting for 27 points while keeping the Owls caged and allowing just 14 tallies. The final was a comfortable 67-34 victory for the Bobcats.
“We did a good job of executing our game plan. We shot the ball well in stretches and worked hard on defense,” said S-T head coach Adam Wollam.
The win improves the Skidmore varsity record to 17-3 overall and their district mark to 3-0.
Eric Schumacher led all scorers with 32 points. John Hernandez and Aaron Hughes followed with nine each. Zeke Huerta recorded seven tallies and Erasmo Huerta added six. Ryan Scott had four points.
The Lady Cats and Bobcats were in Mathis on Tuesday night for games against the Pirates. On Friday night, the two varsity teams will host the George West Longhorns and Lady ’Horns.
