PORT LAVACA — The Trojan powerlifting season got underway on Jan. 5 with the first meet hosted by the Sandcrabs. The varsity boys squad placed third overall, while the girls had a couple of fine individual performances.

“The team did well for its first meet. It was a good chance for some of younger boys and girls to get a feel for things and what an actual powerlifting meet is like,” said Trojan coach Rudy Valerio.

The Trojans got two first place medals and points from Hilario Luna and Tritan Pelitire.

Luna, in the 132-pound division, had a three-lift total of 910 pounds. The total weight is an accumulation of the lifter’s top efforts in dead lift, bench press and squat lifts. Pelitire won the 181-pound class with an amazing three-lift total of 1,365 pounds, almost 100 pounds better than his nearest competitor.

That nearest competitor in the 181-pound class was Trojan Dillon Torres, who recorded a 1,280-pound total for his three lifts. The Trojans also got a second place effort from Samuel Navarro at 148 pounds. Navarro eclipsed the 1,000-pound mark with a three-lift total of 1,035 pounds.

Beeville’s Jacob Flores was second at the meet at 198 pounds with a total of 1,240 pounds. Trojan Steven Naga placed fifth in the same class with a three-lift effort of 825 pounds. Beeville’s Diego Cruz placed fourth in the 275-pound division with a 940-pound total. Trojan Cameron Ellerbee was third in the super heavyweight division at 1,350 pounds lifted in the three events.

Lady Trojan Alexis Pelitire placed second in the 181-pound class with a 730-pound total. April Gonzales-Gutierrez finished fifth in the same weight class with a 550-pound total.

“It is exciting watching these kids improve and the team will be looking forward to its next meet,” said Valerio.

The Trojans will next compete at the Victoria meet on Jan. 19.
