Members of the Karnes County Retired Teachers’ Association met at Barth’s on Jan. 16. Secretary/Treasurer Jan Anderson called the meeting to order and led the members in pledges to the American and Texas flags. The group discussed the Texas Retired Teachers’ Association’s request that members contact their legislators urging them to consider improving the funding of the TRS pension fund and the TRS-Care health insurance fund. The state organization is asking members to mail the fact sheet of TRTA’s top priorities for the 83rd legislative session, found in the latest edition of the The Voice, to legislators.

Under committee reports Margaret Ryan, Health Care Chairman, handed out “Top 15 Super Foods for People Over 50” and the group discussed the various foods listed. Margaret also collected information from members for her report of KCRTA’s participation in the Walks-A-Million program. She also handed out a sheet for recording steps taken in 2013 and a mileage equivalents handout. Jan Anderson, Community Services Chairman, requested that members turn in their volunteer hours to her for her report to the district chairman.

News from District 3 President Helen Sadler included the following: There will be a TRTA Legislative Rally Day, with the date to be announced later. The TRTA District Spring Leadership Training Conference will be held April 24 at the First United Methodist Church in Hallettsville.

In the drawing for a door prize Beverly Newberry was the lucky recipient. With the meeting adjourned, members enjoyed a variety of cookies. The next meeting of KCRTA will be February 20 at Barth’s. Membership in Karnes County Retired Teachers’ Association is open to any retired school district personnel, not just retired teachers.
