THREE RIVERS — It took a good deal longer than anticipated, but the Pettus Eagles captured a 77-76 victory over the host Bulldogs varsity basketball team on Jan. 22, in triple overtime.

“Our young men played their hearts out. They gave everything they had and left it all on the court. I am obviously extremely proud of our team and the effort they put forth during the game,” said Eagle head coach Tony Ferguson.

“This was truly a team victory.”

The Eagles battled from behind most of the night. The Bulldogs were up by four, 17-13, after one period and took a 36-35 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime. Both teams hit for 16 points in the third period as the game went to the final eight minutes of regulation with Three Rivers still holding a one-point lead at 52-51.

The pace slowed in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs tried to use the clock. The Eagles got the extra point they needed as the buzzer sounded with the scoreboard knotted at 61 apiece.

In the first extra period both teams scored five points and in the second OT the squads each produced six markers. It was a 66-66 game heading into the third extra period.

It was a 76-75 TR advantage late in the third OT, but a pressure-packed shot from C.J. Cruz with just 1.5 seconds left on the clock found the bottom of the net to give the Eagles a 77-76 lead. The Bulldogs could not get anything to drop in the final second and a half as the Eagles prevailed in their longest contest of the season, 77-76.

Eric Montez led Pettus with 28 points. Kyle McJunkins added 17. Matt Gonzales was also in double figures with 12. John Grayson hit for eight while Clay Brown finished with six. C.J. Cruz made four, including the game-winner.

The Eagles were in Kenedy on Friday night to tangle with the Lions. On Tuesday evening, the Pettus varsity hosted Runge.
