Holding hearts in front of the newly restored west facade of the Karnes County Courthouse, a group of Karnes County residents shows its love for the 119-year-old building. Representatives of the National Trust for Historic Preservation toured the courthouse Jan. 24 along with local officials involved in the work to restore the building as part of their new “I Love Texas Courthouses” initiative.
In 2012, the National Trust listed Texas’ historic courthouses to its list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places for the second time, and has since named them a National Treasure, signifying their national significance and the Trust’s ongoing commitment to their preservation.
In conjunction with this distinction, National Trust staff are touring a select number of Texas courthouses as part of their new “I Love Texas Courthouses” initiative. The Karnes County Courthouse has been selected to demonstrate the value of the Texas Historical Commission’s Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program. The courthouse is being restored. Major funding for the project was provided through the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program, the largest preservation grant program in the country.
National Trust, THC and Preservation Texas representatives will visit Karnes County on January 24th at 11:00 AM to spotlight the restored courthouse and find out why Karnes County loves its courthouse.
