VICTORIA — A strong start was not enough for the Lady Trojan varsity basketball team on Friday night. The host East Lady Titans caught fire in the second and fourth quarters to post a 70-43 win over the Beeville girls.

The loss puts the Lady Trojans at 6-3 in district, still in a spot for the playoffs and second to the 8-1 Lady Titans. The Lady Trojans sport a 24-7 record on the season.

The Lady Trojans took a 16-13 lead into the second quarter but the Titans exploded and took advantage of a couple of Beeville turnovers in the second period to lead 38-25 at the half.

“I felt we were still OK, but we had a hole we had to get out of, and we just could not get our shots to fall,” said Lady Trojan head coach Katina Walker.

The Titans defense kept the pressure on in the third period, limiting the Lady Trojans to just eight points to add four more points to their margin. It was a 50-33 contest with one quarter left to play.

The Lady Titans never slowed things down and hit for 20 fourth quarter points while the Lady Trojans put up 10.

Two Lady Trojans were in double figures in scoring. Victoria Elizalde hit for 11 in the loss and Ciara Garcia led the team with 14.

The Lady Trojans have three District 30-4A games left as of Monday. They host the Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandies on Tuesday night. On Friday, the Lady Trojans travel to Calallen to face the Wildcats and then wrap up their regular season with a home contest with the Tuloso-Midway Cherokees on Feb. 5.

“We have to play each game as if it is our last in order to stay in good position for the playoffs,” Walker said.
